HULL CONFERENCE TO HEAR ISSUES FACING CARERS OF PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA
Summary:
A Hull conference is to hear the findings of a Government-backed study into the needs of carers of people with dementia this week (Friday 15th April 2011).
Description:
The event is being organised by the city charity, Hull Churches Home from Hospital Service, after receiving funding from the Department of Health to carry out a “needs analysis” into how unpaid or informal carers could be better supported.
The conference, called “The Needs of Carers of People Living with Dementia”, will take place on Friday from 9.30am at the Endsleigh Centre, Beverley Road, Hull. It will hear the findings of consultant Sally Ann Spencer Grey who has been conducting one-to-ones with carers in Hull and hearing their views in group sessions.
Clare Smith, Carers Support Scheme Manager and conference organiser, says: “We hope that the conference will interest professionals working in the field, volunteers and carers themselves. We successfully bid for £25,000 from the Department of Health to run this study from its Reaching Out to Carers Innovation Fund, and we hope to see training opportunities emerge from this work.”
Another keynote speaker is Dr Kevin Doughty, national telecare consultant who will explain how modern technology can help carers cope. The event will also hear how music and the creative arts helps people with dementia and their carers, plus there will be workshops around legal issues, primary care and improving the quality of life. Irene Carr from the Alzheimer’s Society will pose the question “What for the future”?
