Organisation:
Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals is a large acute Trust which provides specialist services to a catchment population of approximately 600,000 in the Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire area. The Trust also provides a number of specialist services (eg neurosciences, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, renal medicine) to a wider population of between 1.05m and 1.25m in the broader geographical area extending from Scarborough in the North Yorkshire area to Grimsby and Scunthorpe in the Lincolnshire area. The Trust employs approximately 6500 (wte) has an annual turnover in excess of £400m (2008/09) and operates from two hospital sites, Castle Hill Hospital and the Hull Royal Infirmary. It is a major partner in the Hull York Medical School and provides a comprehensive range of clinical teaching, training and development.
The Trust is looking to achieve Foundation Trust status in late 2009 - early 2010. NHS Foundation Trusts are a key part of the reform programme in the NHS. They are autonomous organisations with greater freedom to decide how to improve their services and can retain any surpluses they generate, or borrow money to support these investments. These freedoms mean NHS Foundation Trusts can better shape their healthcare services around local needs and priorities.
