Description:
A course in Hull, designed to motivate teenagers and boost their self-esteem to help face the world of work, is likely to be repeated in the autumn following the success of the first one this month.
A full house of 10 young people aged 16-19 from across the city joined the two-day GOALS session organised by Rhema Youth Works at its Newland Avenue headquarters, as part of its Lottery-backed Customize project. The course, devised by a national firm, is the first to be run in Hull to focus on teenagers. Customize, which received a Reaching Communities grant from the Big Lottery Fund earlier this year, is targeting those classed as NEETs – not in education, employment or training - by offering literacy and numeracy sessions and various creative activities to interest young people.
Andy Rugg, 18, says: “I’m in a hostel at the minute and when someone asked me if I wanted to go on a Rhema course, I signed up straight away. I didn’t have any work but now I’ve gained qualifications in Maths and English to help get a job in the future. It’s been a rough patch. Going to church has filled me with confidence and gained more friends. I’ve also taken a cooking course and that’s helping me learn more skills.”
Darrell Wright (18) said: “It gave me a better idea of the working world. I want to be a tattooist and develop a network of shops. It’s a good course as it pushes positive thinking and self-esteem. I didn’t do well at school and didn’t enjoy it either. I lost my last job so I have come on this as I don’t want to be sitting around doing nothing. That’s no good for me.”
Support worker Sami Namih, who ran the course, says: “There’s a lot on the course highlighting that all intelligence isn’t just academic. It’s about people who can talk to people, handle problems, can solve things, are good with their hands. It’s showing different skills, not just Maths and English, and these are not necessarily skills you do get taught at school. The course builds them back up again, making them feel better about themselves and start to ask for opportunities.
“I was very pleased with the response to this first one and hope we can re-run it towards the autumn as the need won’t disappear. Customize tries to engage with young people to get them to do something and earn money by working and paying their own way.”
